Bison Pt. 2: Photographs

Some time ago, I did a post on bison-inpsired art, and here is my follow-up to that post, Bison photographs. There is something so majestic about a bison in the wilderness and something so rad about a bison just hanging out.

p.s. be sure to check out the link to the Toronto Sun article for a great story about a bison riding in a car to go drink a brew.

A Blanket for Henry

Last Monday, my new Nephew, Henry, was born. He is just about the cutest infant I have ever seen.

Every winter I usually tackle one or two knitting projects. I’ve never become particularly skilled, but I try a new challenge every year. Perhaps that would explain why older women are always so good at knitting. This year I made Henry a Hudson Bay inspired crib blanket. I found the project over on The Purl Bee.

Pendleton blankets, including the Hudson Bay, have been everywhere in home decorating for the last year and I saw no reason Henry should be left out of this trend.

NBA Logos Redesigned

As we’re in the midst of the NBA playoffs, I thought it was a good time to post these NBA logo redesigns by Michael Weinstein. I found them a little while back and loved the idea of a league with consistent, well-designed logos. Maybe some day.

While looking for the logos this morning, I also started reading through his actual site, full of historical detail on each team he’s redesigned and images of their old logos. For example, did you know this was the original Detroit Piston’s logo when they were located in Fort Wayne, Indiana?

Original Pistons' Logo

I sure didn’t. Well without further ado, here’s a few of my favorite NBA logo redesigns by Michael Weinstein, and be sure to check out all of his logos, along with the different team’s past and actual current logos here.

Weekend Brunch: Rachel’s Guacamole

My sister, Rachel, makes the best guacamole ever. This is not an overstatement; everybody who’s ever had it agrees. Yesterday, I taught a friend how to make it and I thought it would be nice to share it here as well. I went to Stanley’s and bought about a military backpack’s worth of produce. I always go crazy there because everything is so affordable.

Rachel’s Guacamole

  • 3-4 avocados
  • Juice of one lemon or lime
  • Half of a jalapeno, diced
  • 1 Roma tomato, diced
  • 1/4 of a small red onion, diced
  • 1 tbsp minced garlic
  • Cumin, to taste
  • Smoked paprika, to taste
  • Seasoning salt, to taste

Mash everything together in a bowl using a potato masher or fork and serve.

*We don’t really measure the spices. I usually add a little at a time and taste it to see if I need more.

Local Artist: Jodi Lynn’s Emporium of Doodles

I’ve decided to start a segment on the blog to highlight local artists in and around Detroit and some of the awesome things they’re making.

For my first “Local Artist” segment, I wanted to start with our good friend, Jodi Lynn, of Jodi Lynn’s Emporium of Doodles. She’s a marvelous photographer and illustrator and one of her projects has been to use her drawing skills, some shrinky dinks, and a bit of craftiness to create magnets and jewelry. She’s especially into scientists, but anything with a bit of whimsy is fair game.

She’s also ventured into some laser cutting projects, like these Michigan Night Lights. I can only imagine there’s much more to come! Visit her store to check out the full inventory.

Porch Forts

As the weather gets warmer, I have been slowly working to make my back porch feel more like an extension of my apartment. I am going for a southwest bohemian theme. I want the finished area to be the perfect place to lounge with a book and a glass of iced tea.

I spent Monday night block printing my own chevron fabric. At first I wasn’t sure what to do with it, but I think I’ve settled on making a fort. What could be better than passing your summer days in a whimsical blanket fort on your back porch?

I’ve rounded up some awesome forts made of blankets for inspiration.

Vacation in L.A.

I just returned home from a long-weekend trip to Los Angeles to see the city and visit my younger brother who lives there. Even though I spent a couple years living in San Francisco, not having a car meant only getting to explore what I could get to via BART, and I had never gotten much of a chance to see southern California.

We did a lot of neighborhood exploring, saw a show at the Troubadour, and visited the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles.
