Northwest Territories

There are far too many vacations I want to take and places I want to visit, but most recently I’ve been on a Northwest Territories kick. Something about the scenery, the remoteness, the wildlife, and also they have Wood Bison, which are even larger than Plains Bison.

A Belated 4th of July

I spent some of yesterday working, but at least got out early enough to enjoy a BBQ and Blimes while the weather was still nice. An insane thunder/hail storm that made me think the world was going to end eventually sent me indoors for snacks and DIY Blimes. When I returned home, the storm had passed and I was still able to catch a few fireworks in my neighborhood.

Also, there’s this rad guy and an American flag. Happy 4th of July!

Picture Frame

Over the winter, I had posted about how my friend Dan sent me Beluga and Bison cards from an abandoned camp in Alaska. Ever since then, I’ve been wanting to display them, but as I haven’t been able to find the right frame, I finally decided to just make one.

I wanted the frame to look really worn and rustic since I always think of that abandoned camp in Alaska when I see the cards. I was lucky enough to find the perfect size and style wood from the Architectural Salvage Warehouse.

Bison Pt. 2: Photographs

Some time ago, I did a post on bison-inpsired art, and here is my follow-up to that post, Bison photographs. There is something so majestic about a bison in the wilderness and something so rad about a bison just hanging out.

p.s. be sure to check out the link to the Toronto Sun article for a great story about a bison riding in a car to go drink a brew.

Designer Love: Sandra Dieckmann

Last week, I made a post about bison-themed art, including an image of the design below:

I’ve really liked the illustration for a long time, but was finally able to locate the actual designer, Sandra Dieckmann. Her other drawings are almost as awesome, so I thought I’d share them here and give credit where credit is due.

Animal Cards

The other day I received a letter from my friend, Dan, in Alaska along with these two cards:

beluga card

american bison card

They both have complete descriptions, the history of the animal, and a list that includes phylum, class, order, family, and characteristics. I especially enjoy the little symbols at the top of the cards. The middle one clearly indicates where the animal lives, (in this case the water of the plains), but I’m not sure what the others mean.

The letter explaining how he found the cards goes as follows:

“There’s a lot of junk here in Coldfoot – the whole eastern part of the camp is full of old machinery and vehicles and abandoned by miners and road construction crews. A lot of them have windows broken out and plants growing on them… There’s about 1,000 of these animal cards that I looked through one day. I thought you’d enjoy these two.”

I can only imagine how many other treasures lie in the abandoned part of the camp, but I’m really glad he saved and sent me these two gems with the best animals of all on them.

Animals of America Playset

Awhile back, I posted about a Woodland Michigan Playset I made, which included a little wooden Michigan, deer, bear, and robin. I’ve now begun my second wooden playset, the Animals of America Playset. It will eventually include a wooden United States piece, but for now, here are the Animals of America; a bison, wolf, and eagle.
