When we visited Frankenmuth last weekend, we of course knew about the Frankenmuth Brewery, Zehnder’s famous fried chicken, and the giant year-round Christmas store Bronner’s. What we hadn’t been to before though was the Lager Mill and the Frankenmuth Hisotrical Museum.
Lager Mill is not just a beer store, but also a brewing museum with lots of old milling equipment, info on the brewing history in Frankenmuth, and a huge German beer glass selection.
The Frankenmuth Historical Museum was another great find, especially considering the $2 admission to the brewing museum also included admission to the historical museum.

We usually try to take a small trip every winter, but between moving and Mary starting a new job, it just didn’t happen this year.
Now that we’re finally about settled, we took an early spring trip to Frankenmuth, America’s little Bavaria. Since Frankenmuth is only a little over an hour away and has multiple breweries, it seemed like the perfect weekend retreat.
We loaded up our bikes only to have a chilly, overcast weekend, but we still had a great time walking around downtown and enjoying the alpine architecture and scenery.

I’m a sucker for anything Michigan or Great Lakes themed. So I fell in love with this kickstarter project for posters of all of the Great Lakes states. Meng Yang, the Chicago based graphic designer behind the project, has until March 20 to raise enough money to produce the posters.

I’m always on the lookout for cool laser cut or etched projects, so when I found these great wooden maps of U.S. lakes from Below the Boat, I was blown away. They’re made to be bathymetric charts (the underwater equivalent of a topographic map), so each layer is laser cut as its own piece and then glued.
Of course the Great Lakes maps are the best looking, but maybe I’m biased?

Mary and I have been neglecting the blog recently due to a sudden move to Hamtramck. Being busy setting up our new home and not having internet yet has led to blog updates being a little harder to post than normal. Hopefully order will be restored within the next week and the internet with flow once again.
In the meantime, here’s an ode to our new home of Hamtramck.

A post dedicated to Hamtramck is especially fitting today as it’s Paczki Day and Hamtramck is known for having the best Paczkis pretty much anywhere. I’ve learned that Paczki Day isn’t well known outside of the midwest, so if you don’t know what this wonderful and gluttenous holiday is, see here.

While at my parents’ this past weekend I found a 1959 catalogue for a Fingerle, Hollister, and Wood Lumber Co., an old lumber company that once existed on E. Michigan Ave. in my hometown of Ypsilanti, MI.
While the Fingerle Lumber Company still exists in Ann Arbor, the Fingerle, Hollister, and Wood joint store has been gone long enough that my Dad is the only family member who remembers it, having grown up in the area in the ’60′s.
I loved looking through the catalogue to see the ads, illustrations, design, tools, and lumber of the 1950′s.

Mary and I had the privilege this past weekend of attending Rat Fest at the Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti, Michigan. It was an event that featured nine local brewing guilds, each making four different types of beer for everyone at the event to sample. That’s 36 beers we got to sample!
This year the brew clubs were The Ann Arbor Brewers Guild Hopheads, The Ann Arbor Brewers Guild Yeasters, CraftBeerinMi, Brighton Home Brew Club, Detroit Draft Divas, Motor City Mashers, Muskrat Mashers, The Sons of Liberty, and The Ugly Mug.

We got to vote on several categories and Mary and I both agreed The Motor City Mashers had the best all around selection with their Salty Dog Grapefruit Gose, Peanut Butter Cup Stout, Winter Spice Ale, and Toasted Coconut Porter. Some of our other favorite brews were the Twice Baked Potato DIPA from the Sons of Liberty and the Bombs Away Stout from the Brighton Brew Club.

This Saturday I’ll be heading back to Michigan from Chicago for good. I am so happy and excited to be in the cutest shaped state and the only place I’ll ever feel truly at home. I thought I’d share a few of my favorite things about my favorite state in honor of the move.
In no particular order…
Sleeping Bear Dunes.
Pointing to your hand to explain locations.
The Earthen Jar.
Tahquamenon Falls.
Going “Up North.”
Proximity to Canada.
