Wedding Dress Blues

So, according to my wedding timeline I have only two months before I am supposed to have selected and purchased a dress. I have been so picky about what I want. It’s easy to find pictures of dresses you like, but much harder to find actual dresses to buy. Here’s a roundup of some of my favorites I’ve found on Etsy, but none feel like “the dress” to me.

If anyone has shop recommendations of places to look for wedding dresses, I’d love to hear them.

DIY Christmas Trees

It’s been years now since I’ve had a real Christmas tree, but hopefully this will be my last tree-less year.

For those like me who are either in small apartments or are without a vehicle to transport a large tree in, here’s a great list of DIY Christmas trees you can make to ensure your home is still festive for the holidays.

Mary and I made the first one when we had an apartment together in Chicago, and it turned out great.

Fall Fashion Inspiration: Call the Midwife

call the midwife
I have been completely crushed by the wait for new episodes of ‘Downton Abbey’. Fortunately, I’ve just discovered the series ‘Call the Midwife’ on the BBC. It’s about midwifery in the east end of London in the late 50s.

The costumes are amazing! Plus the nurses ride adorable bicycles when they make house calls. Don’t be surprised if you see me riding down the street in a vintage nurse’s uniform.

School Auction

A closed school in Southwest Detroit recently had an auction to get rid of its contents and I was able to go scour the school and find some really cool stuff. While it’s sad to have another school closing in the area, I can’t deny how fun it was to search an old, four-story school building full of treasures.

green steel box
One of my favorite finds were these steel, green drawers. I’m not sure exactly how I’m going to use it yet, but I have plans to build a desk in the near future, and I’m sure this will become part of it.

stools
You can tell the seats on these stools are in pretty bad shape, but I’m hoping to replace them with some nicer, salvaged wood.

glass jar and bird
The bird is from an antique store I went to with Mary (mentioned here), but now I found this cool science bottle to accompany it. No idea what’s actually inside of it.

books
I love all these books, but the “Let’s Explore the Great Lakes” one specifically has some amazing illustrations inside.

My other favorite find was this school map. Unfortunately, this will have to go into storage until the day I finally have that dream home.

Trucks

There was a time in my life where I never thought I’d want a truck, but the more I keep trying to shove lumber and metal in the back of my little Hyundai Accent, the more I wish they still made trucks that look like these.

Fall Cycling

Over the summer, Mary posted some vintage ads of her Raleigh bicycle, which got me thinking about my bicycle, a Peugeot, and what great ads might exist for it.

I did a little searching yesterday evening and found these gems. Since Peugeot also made cars, I especially love the one where the little boy is riding a bike by a classy car with the caption, “I also have a Peugeot.”

Obsession: Giant Glasses

Yesterday, I found myself driving a sales person at an eye wear store insane with my distaste for every frame they had. I would try on pair after pair and say they were too small and too square. I went into a few places and there are truly no frames that appeal to me. I finally realized I would need to find a vintage pair and get new lenses with my prescription. Here are a few of my favorites on Etsy right now.
